When I was a teenager I spent time at the local library. One day they featured an art exhibit and a black painting caught my eye. I wondered why someone would paint a canvas black and call it art. As I got closer I thought I caught an image hidden in the black. Sure enough, there was a pair of eyes. As I looked even closer a vivid scene sprang into view. A group of soldiers were hiding from an unseen enemy deep in a jungle. I was blown away. Who knew that shades of black could express so much.
I don't know the name of the painting or the artist but it clearly left an impression on me as I can easily recall it 20 years later. Sometimes I feel like I only experience one emotion: Anger. But just like the painting, as I look closer I find a whole palette of emotions that paint a vivid scene.
